The original game was held on 03/04/1974 but had to be abandoned after 18 minutes due to fog, with Hibs leading 1-0 through a Cropley penalty.

The wind and hard ground made conditions difficult, and the result was an extremely untidy game. Bobby Smith's goal gave Hibs their first League success against Motherwell for three years. Derek Spalding, outstanding in defence, earned the praise of his manager who said he was - "...delighted with the progress of this youngster."
