Saturday, 18 April 1959 - the club announce that Gordon Smith is to be freed. Apparently, Hugh Shaw had argued his case for most of the previous night with chairman Harry Swan - but to no avail. Swan decides that having another operation on the shattered right ankle would do more harm than good.
