Tommy Walker scored the winner with a glorious cross shot, from O'Donnell's clever header. Scotland's full-backs nullified the threat from England's wingers, Stanley Matthews (Stoke City) and Cliff Bastin (Arsenal). Their inside-forwards, Willie Hall (Spurs), Micky Fenton (Middlesbrough) and Joe Stephenson (Leeds United) were too frail against the dour Scottish defence.
